.TH NEWGRP 1 .SH NAME newgrp \- log in to a new group .SH SYNTAX .B newgrp group .SH DESCRIPTION .I Newgrp changes the group identification of its caller, analogously to \fIlogin\fP\|(1). The same person remains logged in, and the current directory is unchanged, but calculations of access permissions to files are performed with respect to the new group ID. .PP If the `SHELL' environment variable is set, \fInewgrp\fP will use it as the name of the new shell. The login environment is also initialized for foreign shells. In this way multiple shells can be used on the system interchangably. .PP A password is demanded if the group has a password. .PP .I Newgrp is known to the shell, which executes it directly without a fork. .SH FILES /etc/group, /etc/passwd .SH "SEE ALSO" login(1), group(5) .SH "BUGS" Since newgrp starts a new shell, shell context and variables not in the environment are lost.
